I NPCed for a second run of [livejournal.com profile] thekinginyellow's The Dance and the Dawn LARP (from [livejournal.com profile] locke61dv's RPG) and it was just as much fun as the first time, though harder to photograph (because tighter quarters). New pictures and old are up. It's quite possible to scrutinize them for plot points, so if you aren't spoiled for it and might want to play it at Vericon, well, don't scrutinize them like that!

Seeing the same scenario played twice with different players was really interesting. [livejournal.com profile] saxikath and I did that with Live-Action Clue once upon at time, but that was partly a way of debugging the rules of the game. Given that some of the characters are heavily based on Utena characters, [livejournal.com profile] thekinginyellow noted early on that it was like watching the TV series of Utena and then movie of Utena. Variations on a theme.

The players are mostly trying to find their true loves by the end of the game. Unless they're just trying to screw things up for potential true loves. I am simply fascinated that essentially the same pairings ended up happening this time around, though in some cases for different reasons. Emergent TDaTD behavior? If it happens a third time I'll be inclined to suggest that the GM is wrong about who should end up together. ;-)

Now I dissect the end games some. LARPfic! No, no, not really. That would be truly scary.

If you want to remain unspoiled for the LARP, go no further. )

Due to a last-minute cancellation, they really need one more player, preferably male. As I said before:

The Dance and the Dawn is an RPG [livejournal.com profile] locke61dv wrote, and there's a LARP spinoff running this Saturday (re-running a scenario I'm already familiar with, so I can't play). It's very spiffy, combining courtly manners, ballroom dancing, the occasional swordfight, and the search for Twoo Wuv. ... I recommend it.

I think [livejournal.com profile] thekinginyellow is now the best person to contact.

I listen to the Slice of Sci-Fi podcast, and it gets so much voicemail that's spawned its own separate episodes of the show. And this is a transcript of a fabulous 6-minute-long voicemail from the April 6 voicemail show (#51). It starts about 4.5 minutes in if you want to listen to yourselves. I would totally credit this or ask permission if I knew who to ask, but there's no attribution given. Forgive the SoSF in-jokes.

And this is for all the gamers: )
The part I will take away and use repeatedly is "Think carefully about who you'd switch sides for, but really dwell on who you would double back for." Heh.

I feel the urge to write a proper update, but I fail to have the time--no, really, it's energy--to write rather than passively consume. Thus! Link sausage!

As forwarded to metafandom: gaudior's thoughts on cultural appropriation as an anime fan, in response to a rant she links to. It took me a few days simply to read all the comments the original post generated in various forums. Head too full, but of stuff worth thinking about.

And in bizarre contrast, via Neil Gaiman...
The equally megatalented, although significantly shorter than Thea Gilmore, Stephin Merritt, is being defended against what seem to me to be remarkably wrong-headed accusations of racism (he said on a panel that Zip-e-dee-doo-dah was a great song from a bad movie) this morning over at Slate.
... buh? There's more to it than that, but poor Stephin (except really I'm sure he can take care of himself).

P.S. If I type the letter h into the search bar of this browser and look at the autocomplete options, I get "Harvard Shuttle schedule", "Heimdall kills Loki", and "House, M.D. episode guide". Which somehow sums up something about the state of my brain right now. *dashes off to catch the shuttle*

Oh yes--I have leaped into the latter part of the 20th century. I have a cell phone. If you'd like the number, e-mail me at clauclauclaudia at livejournal.

So, there have been news stories about this giant elephant robot in London, but they typically only have one picture from afar, which really doesn't do the whole occasion justice. Luckily, there are [livejournal.com profile] fuchsoid's journal entries to fill in the gaps. Giant robot elephant! Giant puppet little girl! Who arrived in a steampunk wooden space capsule! And apparently the girl then got on a scooter, though there are no pictures of that.

... dude!

Off to enjoy local art now. Probably Mad Oyster and then Union Square today, since we've missed that area the last couple years.

EDIT: Other London pictures made it to Making Light. The official site. BBC galleries.

(fooled some of you with that title, didn't I?)

I'm listening to "Great Big Stuff" from the musical of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" on the radio ( www.wers.org ). It always gives me the giggles when broadcasts bleep this song, because the lyric "the fashion plate I date'll give me hummers in my Hummer" always becomes "... ******s in my Hummer".

... *gasp* They didn't bleep it! They bleeped "shit" in the next verse instead. ZOMG!

Riffing off of [livejournal.com profile] arsmith's entry of a few weeks back:

[livejournal.com profile] clauclauclaudia's LiveJournal popularity rating is 4.73/10.
[livejournal.com profile] clauclauclaudia is more popular than 99.57% of all LiveJournal users.
[livejournal.com profile] clauclauclaudia is more popular than 78.5% of their mutual friends.

How popular are you?
LJ Popularity created by [livejournal.com profile] thehumangame.

I find this interesting. It's a logarithmic scale. The median popularity rating is 1.25, and, eyeballing, I'm in the top third of the popularity range for my mutual friends list, but all but about four of them are above the median.

Which means we're all freaks (well, almost all). Usual LiveJournal usage is to have a solitary journal or a couple friends, and *not* to have friended anyone you don't personally know. What I think of as the "LiveJournal experience" is to be part of these overlapping webs of acquaintance and shared culture... but it ain't necessarily so. Or if it is, then the essence of LiveJournal is experienced by a relatively small proportion of LiveJournal users. I think that's more likely.

... is the Alice of Wonderland fame named "Fairchild"? Is this something Alan Moore invented for his forthcoming books?

Alice is named for Alice Pleasance Liddell, a real girl the author knew. But as far as I know the fictional Alice doesn't have a last name. I certainly can't find any evidence that it's "Fairchild". Help?

But if you're Boston-ish or Montreal-ish and you'd like to see Wil Wheaton do a signing nearby, he needs to know pretty darn soon. Eventful is a nifty site. If you might want to click to demand anybody else's presence, then I recommend registering there, but you don't have to to register a demand.

Context here, Boston clickable thingy below. See his original post for Montreal clickable thingy.

I was pointing people to "Consequence Free" and actually read the lyrics, for possibly the first time ever. I am dismayed to note that the final verse line is "slip off the edge, and never worry 'bout the fall". I was so sure it was "step off the edge".

... which is probably how I will continue to sing it, brains being what they are.

(For those drawing a blank on this, http://www.greatbigsea.com/themusic/turn.html has both lyrics and song clip.)

That lyric always reminds me of this image (apparently, hotlinking bad, so click through):

When you see this on your friendslist, quote Leo McGarry.

I can't do better than one of gnomi's choices:

"This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out. A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, 'Hey you. Can you help me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, 'Father, I'm down in this hole can you help me out?' The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by, 'Hey, Joe, it's me can you help me out?' And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, 'Are you stupid? Now we're both down here.' The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out.' " (Noel)

Okay, kids, now's your chance. The British 2005 season of Doctor Who, which is fantabulous, is airing in the US starting tonight, on the Sci-Fi Channel. Make your popcorn, set your TiVos, and WATCH.

No previous experience with Doctor Who required.

No previous science fiction fandom required.

No really. People have loved it without either of those. The leads are solid and the stories are too. Past fans will have to get over the lack of wobbly sets and on-the-cheap F/X--they did it thoroughly this time around. Give it a shot, tonight at nine, or check the rerun schedule.

*sly voice* "Try it, you'll like it."

... man, now I need some Doctor Who icons that aren't spoilery for this season for you guys...
