random t-shirt plug

... okay, I don't think I ever make commercial posts, but I love this t-shirt, and so do so many geeks when they spot me in it.

Isn't that awesome? It's a Woot shirt, which means that it's on sale only until such time as it's not in the top 20 sellers on the site and then it gets axed.

I don't know how likely it is for it to get axed this time around because they didn't give us a Friday update on the rankings like they used to/usually do. It's had a good long run, 20 weeks. But I believe it's mathematically possible this will be its last weekend on sale. If it is, your last chance to buy is Monday before midnight Central time.

But buy now and maybe it'll have another week of life. :) Just click the awesome picture.

Doctor Who in the USA

Okay, kids, now's your chance. The British 2005 season of Doctor Who, which is fantabulous, is airing in the US starting tonight, on the Sci-Fi Channel. Make your popcorn, set your TiVos, and WATCH.

No previous experience with Doctor Who required.

No previous science fiction fandom required.

No really. People have loved it without either of those. The leads are solid and the stories are too. Past fans will have to get over the lack of wobbly sets and on-the-cheap F/X--they did it thoroughly this time around. Give it a shot, tonight at nine, or check the rerun schedule.

*sly voice* "Try it, you'll like it."

... man, now I need some Doctor Who icons that aren't spoilery for this season for you guys...

The new Doctor Who (the 2005 season) will be coming to the Sci-Fi channel in March and finally be released on North American DVD in July.

Yay!

Big Finish audio snippet

I've been listening to lots of Doctor Who and Who-related audio dramas lately. From Gallifrey 1.4: A Blind Eye (featuring Romana 2 and Leela), somewhere in Europe on a train:

Timelord: I assume the Presidential TARDIS is somewhere in the vicinity?
Romana: It's in the baggage car disguised as a ventriloquist's booth.
*silence*
Romana: ... well, there are clowns or something on the train.

I'm not used to Romana playing straight man. I like it.

Doctor Who radio/web alert

Whether you receive BBC7 radio or not, I recommend Doctor Who fans listen to the audio Who's they're now running--they're ones that came out on CD starting in early 2001. The first one aired on Saturday, meaning it's up the rest of the week on their Listen Again page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain/saturday/

They're running a bunch of Paul McGann stories, nobody else. This makes sense as they're more of a continuing storyline than the other audio doctors' stories. I think it's a really moving storyline so far--I haven't reached the end of it yet on CD, but I've gotten past the point of what they intend to air through November. I'm no real Paul McGann fan (though I thought he did a creditable job with a bad script in the TV movie), either. I just like the "season" and the storyline with the companion they introduce for him. I *think* it leads into the Time War and all that (so feeds into the Eccleston season that just aired), though I can't be certain--I haven't quite reached the end of the storyline.

If you tune in for the rest of Storm Warning, listen for Gareth Thomas (Blake from Blake's 7) guest starring. I totally missed that it was him first time through.

... and decided to broadcast the first McGann series with a slight amendment, replacing Minuet in Hell with Invaders from Mars. This was due to some of the content within Minuet being deemed unsuitable for early evening broadcast.

Well, yes, that would be the satanistic bordello with S&M tones, that would. It's amazing the stuff they do in the audios that I never would have dreamed of having as part of a Who story. Though sometimes they do quite clever things with the format. And sometimes quite silly ones (I just heard a Colin Baker Gilbert and Sullivan pastiche).

Apparently, back in 1993, Anthony Head, Alexis Denisof, and John Barrowman were the stars in a production of Rope. Yes, Giles, Wesley, and Captain Jack (no, the other one) were all vibing homosexually at each other in a tense thriller play. Oh. My. God. I can't believe they recast it before it reached London!

If I could take a TARDIS to see any play... well, actually there are many ancient things that would be fascinating. But in the modern era, this would be second, right behind Sir Ian McKellan and Dame Judi Dench in Macbeth. At least that one I can see a video adaptation of....
